The Finish Line No One Expected

In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semi-final with everything on the line. He had trained for years, overcome five surgeries, and fought his way back to elite competition. This was his moment.

Then, halfway around the track, his hamstring snapped. Redmond crumpled to the ground while the other runners surged ahead. Medical staff rushed toward him with a stretcher, but he waved them off. He stood up. He started hopping toward the finish line.

Then came the moment that sixty-five thousand spectators would never forget. A large man pushed past security and onto the track. It was Jim Redmond, Derek's father. He wrapped his arm around his son's shoulder and said, "We're going to finish this together." And they did. Step by agonizing step, father and son crossed that finish line while the entire stadium rose to its feet in tears.

The writer of Hebrews tells us to run with perseverance the race marked out for us. But notice — the passage never promises we will run it alone. The Almighty is the Father who leaves the stands. When your hamstring tears, when the dream collapses at the halfway mark, when you cannot take another step on your own, He comes alongside you and whispers the same thing Jim Redmond whispered to his son: "We're going to finish this together."

You were never meant to limp alone.
