The Finish Line We Cannot Reach Alone

In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semi-final carrying the weight of years of injuries, surgeries, and setbacks. He had fought his way back to the Games, and this was his moment.

Then, roughly 150 meters into the race, his hamstring snapped. Derek crumpled onto the track in agony as the other runners surged past him. The race was over — but Derek Redmond refused to quit. He pulled himself up and began hobbling toward the finish line, tears streaming down his face.

Then something happened that sixty-five thousand spectators would never forget. A large man pushed past security and fought his way onto the track. It was Jim Redmond — Derek's father. He wrapped his arm around his son and said, "We're going to finish this together." And they did. Step by agonizing step, father and son crossed that finish line while the entire stadium rose to its feet.

Faith works like that. There are stretches of life when our strength gives out completely — when grief or doubt or failure tears through us and we collapse on the track. But the God who Scripture calls our Father does not watch from the stands. He comes to us. He lifts us. As Isaiah 41:10 promises, "I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand."

You do not have to finish on your own. The Almighty is already on the track.
