The Flight That Shouldn't Be Possible

In 2007, scientists from the United States Geological Survey fitted a Bar-tailed Godwit with a satellite transmitter and watched in astonishment. The bird, tagged simply as E7, launched from the mudflats of Alaska and flew south over the Pacific Ocean — no stops, no food, no rest — for nine straight days. When E7 finally touched down in New Zealand, she had covered 7,145 miles of open water without a single landmark to guide her.

There were no islands to rest on. No visible trail to follow. Just endless ocean below and an internal compass that said, "Keep going."

Before takeoff, E7's body had done something remarkable. She had shrunk her own internal organs — her intestines, kidneys, even her liver — to make room for the fat reserves she would need. She literally reorganized herself from the inside out for a journey she could not see the end of.

This is what trust looks like — not a calm feeling, but a total reorientation of your life around a destination you cannot yet see. The Godwit doesn't understand atmospheric science or migratory patterns. She simply goes.

The writer of Hebrews understood this: "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Sometimes the Almighty asks us to launch out over deep water with no landmarks in sight. He doesn't always show us the map. But He built the compass, and He knows the way home.
