The Fox Who Taught Us to Wait
In Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's The Little Prince, there is a moment that has quietly shaped readers for over eighty years. A lonely fox asks the little prince to "tame" him — to build a bond between them. But the fox explains that taming cannot be rushed. "You must be very patient," he says. "First you will sit down at a little distance from me... in the grass. I shall look at you out of the corner of my eye, and you will say nothing... But you will sit a little closer to me, every day."
No grand gesture. No shortcut. Just faithful presence, repeated across time — sitting a little closer, day after day, until trust takes root.
This is how the Almighty so often works in our lives. We want transformation in an instant, but God invites us into something slower and deeper. James 4:8 says, "Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you." That drawing near is not a single leap but a daily practice — returning again and again to the place where He meets us.
Patience is not passive waiting. It is the active discipline of showing up, sitting a little closer to God each day, and trusting that something real is growing even when we cannot yet see it. The fox knew what we so easily forget: the things that matter most are always tamed slowly.
