The Freedom to Say No
In April 2021, Apple released iOS 14.5 with a feature called App Tracking Transparency. Before that update, apps on your iPhone silently tracked everything — the websites you visited, the purchases you made, the places you went. Hundreds of companies built detailed profiles of your habits without your knowledge or consent. Then a simple prompt appeared on screens around the world: "Ask App Not to Track." For the first time, users had the power to opt out. And the vast majority did.
Sin works like those invisible trackers. It follows us silently — building patterns, reinforcing habits, cataloging our weaknesses. We return to the same temptations, fall into the same cycles, walk the same worn paths, often barely aware of how closely we are being followed. But the Gospel gives us something revolutionary: the authority to say no. Paul writes, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free" (Galatians 5:1). Not freedom from every temptation — the prompts still appear — but freedom from their dominion over us.
Christ does not promise a life without solicitation. He promises something better: a life where you are no longer at the mercy of every ping, every pull, every old habit that once tracked you without your permission. You have been given the power to decline. That is the freedom the Cross purchased.
