The Friends We Cannot Spare

In The Four Loves, C.S. Lewis makes a striking observation about friendship and community. He writes that in every circle of friends, each person draws out something unique from the others. "In each of my friends there is something that only some other friend can fully bring out," Lewis explains. When Charles is present, Roland says things he would never say to just Lewis alone. And when Roland is there, Charles reveals dimensions of himself that remain hidden otherwise.

Then Lewis presses the point further. When one friend dies, you do not simply lose that friend. You lose the parts of every other friend that only the departed could call forth. The group becomes smaller in ways no one anticipated. Something irreplaceable has gone quiet.

This is why the body of Christ is never an optional add-on to private faith. The Apostle Paul told the Corinthians that the eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you." Every member of a congregation draws out gifts in the others that would otherwise remain dormant. Your presence in this community is not incidental. There are things your neighbor in the pew will never become without you sitting beside them, and there are parts of your own soul that will only awaken in their company.

The Lord designed us not for isolated devotion but for a fellowship where each voice brings out a song the others cannot sing alone.
