The Gardener Who Saved the World

In The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, there is a moment that has always moved me. Samwise Gamgee, a simple gardener from the Shire, stands at the edge of his known world. He has never traveled beyond the borders of his quiet homeland. Frodo tells him to go back, that the journey ahead is too dangerous. But Sam plants his feet and says, "If I take one more step, it'll be the farthest away from home I've ever been."

And he takes that step.

Sam never asked to carry the fate of Middle-earth on his shoulders. He was not a warrior, not a wizard, not a king. He was a gardener who loved his friend. Yet by the end of the story, Frodo himself admits he could never have destroyed the ring without Sam. The most unqualified person in the fellowship became the most indispensable.

God works the same way. He does not call the equipped — He equips the called. Moses stuttered. David was the runt of his family. Peter was an impulsive fisherman. The Almighty has never been impressed by résumés. He is looking for willing hearts.

You may feel like a gardener in a world that needs warriors. But the Lord who knit you together in your mother's womb did not make you by accident. Your purpose is not something you need to go find. It is something He placed inside you before you drew your first breath. Take the step.
