The Geometry of Mending
In 1892, German surgeon Julius Wolff published a discovery that still shapes orthopedic medicine today. He observed that human bone is not static material — it actively remodels itself in response to stress. What became known as Wolff's Law revealed something remarkable about fractures: when a bone breaks and begins to heal, the body rushes specialized cells called osteoblasts to the injury site. These cells lay down new bone tissue in a thickened mass called a callus, and that repaired section often becomes denser and stronger than the bone surrounding it.
The break site becomes the strongest point.
Sit with that for a moment. God built into our very bones a healing process where the place of greatest damage becomes the place of greatest strength. The fracture does not simply return to what it was. It is rebuilt into something more resilient.
This is what the Almighty does with a wounded soul. The psalmist knew it: "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds" (Psalm 147:3). That word "binds" carries the sense of wrapping tightly, of reinforcing. God does not merely patch us back together. He reconstructs us at the fracture line.
Whatever has broken you — grief, betrayal, failure, loss — the Great Physician is not restoring you to your original condition. He is building you back stronger at the very place you shattered. Your healed wound may become the sturdiest thing about you.
