The Gift No One Wants

In the 1950s, Dr. Paul Brand, a British surgeon serving at a leprosy hospital in Vellore, India, made a discovery that changed medicine. For centuries, people believed leprosy itself rotted the flesh. Brand proved them wrong. The disease did something far more insidious — it destroyed nerve endings, robbing patients of their ability to feel pain.

Without pain, his patients burned their hands on cooking pots and never flinched. They walked on broken bones without limping. They injured themselves again and again, never receiving the warning signal that something was wrong. It was not the disease that destroyed their bodies. It was the absence of pain's purpose.

Brand spent the rest of his career arguing what no one wanted to hear: pain is a gift. Not because suffering is good, but because pain has a sacred function. It tells us where we are broken so we can seek healing.

Some of you are living through a season that feels purposeless — a season of pain, of waiting, of confusion. But the God who designed every nerve ending in your body does not waste a single experience. The Almighty who gave pain its protective purpose is the same God who promises that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.
