The Gift That Built the World

In 1989, a British computer scientist named Tim Berners-Lee, working at a research lab in Switzerland, invented the World Wide Web. He created the protocols that would become the foundation of modern life — HTML, HTTP, the URL system. Every website you have ever visited, every online purchase, every video call with your grandchildren exists because of what he built.

Here is what makes his story remarkable: he gave it all away. Berners-Lee refused to patent his invention. He released it freely, with no royalties, no licensing fees, no restrictions. Analysts have estimated that had he patented the web, he could have become the wealthiest person in history. Instead, he sacrificed that claim so the world could flourish.

When asked why, he said simply that the web would never have taken off if it had not been free. Something had to be given up so that everything else could grow.

That is the pattern of the cross. Jesus did not hold tightly to what was rightfully His. Philippians 2 tells us He "did not consider equality with God something to be grasped," but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, giving His life so that salvation could be offered freely to every person on earth.

No patent. No paywall. No fine print. Just an open invitation.

The greatest gifts — in this world and for eternity — come to us because Someone was willing to let go of what He could have kept.
