The Gift That Guides Us
Dr. Paul Brand spent decades as a hand surgeon among leprosy patients in Vellore, India. What he discovered changed medical understanding forever: leprosy does not destroy fingers and toes directly. It destroys the nerves' ability to feel pain. Without pain's purposeful signal, patients would walk on broken bones, grip scalding handles, and sleep through rat bites — unknowingly destroying their own bodies.
Pain, Brand realized, was never the enemy. It was a gift with a purpose.
Every nerve ending in your body exists for a reason. The sharp sting when you touch a hot stove is not punishment — it is protection. The ache in your chest after loss is not weakness — it is love doing its holy work. Remove pain's purpose, and the body consumes itself.
Brand later wrote with Philip Yancey in The Gift of Pain that the one thing worse than feeling pain is feeling nothing at all.
The same is true of the life God gives us. Every season — even the difficult ones — carries divine intention. The Apostle Paul understood this when he wrote, "We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose" (Romans 8:28).
You were not placed in this world accidentally. Your gifts, your struggles, your particular story — the Almighty wastes none of it. Even what hurts has a purpose in His hands.
