The Gift You'd Never Choose

In the 1950s, Dr. Paul Brand was working with leprosy patients in Vellore, India, when he made a discovery that reshaped modern medicine. Leprosy, he found, does not directly destroy flesh. The bacteria attack nerve endings, robbing patients of the ability to feel pain. Without that warning system, patients walked on broken bones, gripped scalding pots, and wore through their own skin — all without knowing it. The destruction came not from the disease itself but from losing pain's purpose.

Brand spent decades studying what he later called, in his book with Philip Yancey, The Gift of Pain. He came to see pain not as a flaw in the human design but as one of its most essential features — a guardian that most of us never think to thank.

Purpose works the same way in the life of faith. We often wish God would remove the things that stretch us — the difficult calling, the uncomfortable conviction, the season that makes no sense. But just as every nerve ending in your body exists to keep you whole, every piece of your story exists to keep you aligned with who God made you to be.

Paul wrote to the Philippians from a prison cell, yet declared, "For to me, to live is Christ" (1:21). Even confinement had purpose.

The things you would never choose may be the very things keeping your soul alive.
