The Gift You Never Wanted
Dr. Paul Brand spent decades treating leprosy patients in Vellore, India, and he made a discovery that changed medicine. Leprosy, he found, does not cause fingers and toes to rot away. The disease destroys nerve endings — it steals the ability to feel pain. Without pain to warn them, patients would grip scalding pots, walk on broken bones, or sleep through a rat gnawing their fingers. The body was destroying itself because it had lost its alarm system.
Brand wrote in his book The Gift Nobody Wants that pain is not the enemy we imagine it to be. It is a guardian. Every ache, every sting, every throb carries a message: something here needs attention. Pain has a purpose, and when that purpose is removed, catastrophe follows.
We spend so much of our lives trying to escape discomfort — the sting of conviction, the ache of loneliness, the throb of a calling that will not leave us alone. We pray for God to take the pain away. But what if the Almighty designed some of our discomfort to serve as a signal? What if that restlessness you feel is not a malfunction but a message — your soul telling you that you were made for something you have not yet stepped into?
Do not numb the signal. Listen to it. Your discomfort may be pointing you toward the very purpose God has written into your bones.
