The God Who Wastes Nothing
For decades, geneticists dismissed roughly 98 percent of the human genome as "junk DNA." These vast stretches of genetic code didn't produce proteins, so scientists assumed they served no purpose — evolutionary leftovers, biological clutter taking up space. Then in 2012, the ENCODE Project — a massive international research effort involving over 400 scientists — revealed something stunning. That so-called junk wasn't junk at all. It contained millions of regulatory switches that control when and how genes turn on and off. Without those sequences, the protein-coding genes couldn't function properly. The material everyone had written off as meaningless turned out to be essential.
I wonder how many of us have felt like junk DNA. You look at the people around you who seem to be doing the visible, important work — the protein-coding genes, if you will — and you quietly conclude that your life doesn't matter much. You're just taking up space.
But the God who knit you together in your mother's womb doesn't do pointless. El Shaddai, the All-Sufficient One, doesn't create waste. Every season you've walked through, every skill you thought was useless, every quiet act of faithfulness no one noticed — it all has regulatory purpose in His design.
You may not see what your life is switching on. But the Almighty does. And He has never, not once, created junk.
