The Godly Man Meets God in Rejoicing
Isaiah 63:5 presents a transformative portrait of the righteous life and its divine reward. The godly man exhibits three distinguishing marks. First, he worketh righteousness—not confined to manual, commercial, or professional spheres alone, but in all his labors rectitude governs him, not expediency. Second, he rejoiceth and worketh together; happiness flows naturally from righteous action, for his affections harmonize, his conscience affirms him, and Adonai blesses him. Third, he remembers God in all His ways—recognizing the Almighty's manifold methods displayed in nature, human governance, and the dispensations of redeeming grace.
Yet the passage reveals something more profound. "Thou meetest him that rejoiceth"—God himself encounters such a man. These are conscious meetings; the righteous know "God is in this place," unlike the unregenerate who remain unconscious of divine presence. They are loving meetings, as when a father embraced the prodigal son—overflowing with affection and joy. Most remarkably, they are preparatory meetings, designed to ready the soul for uninterrupted, beatific, eternal communion with the Almighty.
The apostle Paul, writing centuries later, echoed this same sequence: remembrance of God's character produces joy, joy generates righteousness, and righteousness invites God's conscious presence. Thus the righteous life ascends like a great staircase, each flight drawing the worshipper higher toward God's face itself.
