The Grandmother Who Never Stopped Singing
Maria Santos was seventy-three years old when the soldiers came to her village outside San Salvador in 1981. They told the people to stop gathering for worship. They burned the small wooden church on the hillside. They said faith was dangerous.
The next Sunday, Maria carried her worn Bible to the charred remains and began singing hymns alone in the ashes. Her neighbors watched from behind curtained windows. A young soldier approached her, rifle slung across his chest. "Old woman, didn't you hear the order?"
Maria looked up at him with steady eyes. "I heard it. But I am not ashamed of what I carry in this book. It is stronger than your rifle."
The soldier walked away. The following Sunday, three women joined Maria in the ashes. The Sunday after that, eleven. Within two months, forty people stood singing where the church had been. They rebuilt it with their own hands — stronger than before.
