The Guardian That Never Sleeps

Right now, as you sit in this room, a quiet war is being waged inside every cell of your body. Scientists estimate that each of your thirty-seven trillion cells sustains between ten thousand and one hundred thousand DNA lesions every single day — damage from sunlight, normal metabolism, even the oxygen you breathe.

And yet you are still here. You are still whole.

That is because God designed an astonishing repair system within you. Specialized enzymes move along each damaged strand, letter by letter, correcting errors with remarkable precision. A protein known as p53 — which researchers have called "the guardian of the genome," a name coined by biologist David Lane — patrols constantly, detecting breaks and halting everything until the damage is addressed. When one repair pathway fails, backup systems engage. The work never stops. It never takes a day off.

Here is what strikes me: the repair is almost always invisible. You do not feel it happening. There is no announcement, no fanfare. Just faithful, relentless, unseen work — hour after hour, year after year.

Is that not a picture of what the Apostle Paul describes? "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up" (Galatians 6:9).

Some of you are in a season where faithfulness feels invisible. The work you are doing in your marriage, your parenting, your ministry seems to produce no visible result. But perseverance is rarely dramatic. It is almost always quiet, steady, and unseen — and it is holding everything together.
