The Guts Not to Fight Back

In 1947, Branch Rickey sat across from Jackie Robinson and asked him a question that would change American sports forever. It wasn't about batting averages or fielding percentages. Rickey wanted to know if Robinson had "the guts not to fight back."

For an entire season with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Robinson endured death threats, racial slurs from the stands, and spikings from opposing players sliding into first base. Pitchers threw at his head. Hotels refused him rooms. Some of his own teammates petitioned to have him removed from the roster.

And Robinson waited. He absorbed every insult. He answered hatred with excellence — a .297 batting average, Rookie of the Year, and a pennant for Brooklyn. He had promised Rickey he would hold his tongue for three years, and he kept that promise.

The Apostle Paul wrote, "Love is patient, love is kind" (1 Corinthians 13:4). But Robinson showed us what that patience costs. It is not passivity. It is not weakness. It is the fierce, deliberate choice to absorb suffering and respond with grace — trusting that God is doing something bigger than what you can see in this inning.

Sometimes the Most High asks us to wait — not because He has forgotten us, but because our patience is building something that our retaliation never could.
