The Healing Power of Being Held Together

In 1978, Dr. Edgar Rey Sanabria faced a crisis at the Instituto Materno Infantil in Bogotá, Colombia. His neonatal unit lacked enough incubators for premature infants, and babies were dying. In desperation, he tried something radical: he placed the tiny newborns skin-to-skin against their mothers' chests. The results stunned the medical world. Babies who received this "kangaroo care" regulated their own body temperature. Their heart rates stabilized. Their breathing steadied. They gained weight faster and survived at dramatically higher rates. The mother's body became the incubator.

Medical science now confirms what Dr. Rey discovered: human bodies are designed to heal in proximity to other human bodies. A mother's skin literally regulates her infant's nervous system. We are not built to survive alone.

The apostle Paul knew this long before modern neonatology. "If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it" (1 Corinthians 12:26). The church is not a collection of isolated incubators, each of us sealed off in our own glass box. We are a body — skin to skin, breath to breath, heartbeat answering heartbeat.

When you pull away from the community of faith, something in you grows cold. You were never meant to regulate alone. The God who knit you together in your mother's womb designed you to be held close by His people.
