The Heartbeat Next Door

Research in cellular biology has revealed something extraordinary about heart muscle cells. When isolated cardiomyocytes — individual heart cells — are placed alone in a laboratory dish, each one beats to its own erratic rhythm. Some pulse quickly, others slowly, each keeping its own uncertain time.

But when researchers place those cells close enough to touch one another, something shifts. Without any command, without any external signal, the cells begin to adjust. Within minutes, they synchronize — beating together as one.
