The Hidden Fruit of the Spirit: Love as Evidence of Grace
The works of the flesh are manifest and plain to all, yet the fruit of the Spirit operates as a hidden life—real nonetheless, producing genuine evidence of God's presence in the soul. The Holy Spirit Himself is the source of all spiritual fruit, and this fruit does not admit of exhaustive classification, though three groups emerge: Christian states of mind in their general aspect; qualities affecting intercourse with neighbours; and principles guiding Christian conduct.
All fruits flow from one source and conform to one rule—the law of God. Each believer must possess them all, at least in germ form. Grace in the soul becomes the reflection of Christ's glory (2 Corinthians 3:19), yet no true reflection lacks the leading features of the Saviour's moral glory.
Consider the soul in a state of grace and therefore in the love of Elohim. Love unites us with God; joy means thanksgiving and consciousness of God's infinite goodness; peace brings rest with God, within ourselves, and with all mankind. The fruits relating to our neighbour begin with patience. Do we bear with our neighbours, or do we remain irritable, revengeful, resentful? If the benignity of God dwells within us, long-suffering—another name for patience—must characterize our lives. Growth in grace provides the best security for crucifying the flesh. Be filled with the Spirit, avoiding whatever grieves Him or tempts His withdrawal. Yield readily to His godly motions and guidance. The daily life must be lived in the power and under the influence of the Spirit.
