The Hobbit Who Stood Before the Dark Lord

In The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, there is a moment that still catches in my throat. The great armies have fallen back. The Dark Lord's forces seem unstoppable. And there stands Frodo's faithful gardener, Samwise Gamgee — a hobbit with no training in warfare, no magical powers, no claim to greatness — lifting a sword against Shelob, a spider the size of a house, because his friend lies motionless on the ground.

Sam is terrified. You can see it in his eyes, hear it in his trembling voice. He doesn't charge in with a battle cry. He whispers, "Let him go, you filth." And then he fights anyway.

That is what courage looks like for most of us. Not the absence of fear, but the refusal to let fear have the final word. Not the grand heroic gesture, but the small, shaking step forward because someone we love needs us.

Scripture never promises God's people immunity from fear. What the Almighty says, over and over, is "Fear not, for I am with you." Courage isn't feeling no tremor in your hands. Courage is lifting those trembling hands anyway — to pray, to serve, to speak truth, to love — because the One who stands with you is greater than whatever stands against you.

You don't need to be a warrior. You just need to take the next faithful step.
