The Inerrant Map in a Shifting World
A seasoned cartographer once explained why sailors in the age of exploration trusted Mercator's projection above all others. It was not merely beautiful or convenient — it was mathematically precise. Every bearing plotted on that chart corresponded exactly to reality. A sailor who trusted the map and followed its lines would arrive safely. One who second-guessed the chart, preferring his own instincts against wind and current, often ended up on the rocks.
James 1:5 tells us plainly: "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him." Notice the confidence of this promise. It is not hedged with uncertainty. The God who cannot lie, whose Word is wholly truthful and without error in all it affirms, has bound Himself to this commitment.
The wisdom God gives is not the shifting speculation of human philosophy. As Wayne Grudem has noted, because Scripture is God-breathed in its entirety, we can trust every promise it contains with absolute assurance. God's wisdom comes to us through His inerrant Word and through the Holy Spirit illuminating that Word to our minds.
When confusion presses in — when cultural voices contradict one another and worldly counsel shifts with every news cycle — the believer has a fixed reference point. Ask God. Open His infallible Scriptures. The Chart is precise, the Cartographer is faithful, and the wisdom He gives will never run you aground.
