The Inexhaustible Riches Hidden in Scripture

Harry Melvill, in his Golden Lecture of 1850, marveled at a truth that should stagger every believer: the Bible never exhausts itself. A miner descends into earth's darkness seeking precious metals, extracting what he finds, then moving forward—the vein runs out. But the Word of Yahweh knows no such depletion. The psalmist cried out at midnight, his eyes opened (paqach) before the watches, meditating upon God's promises. Why? Because he had discovered an endless reservoir. Each generation drinks deeply, yet the well overflows for the next. Augustine found profound theology in Genesis; Luther discovered justification by faith in Romans; Wesley encountered grace in an instant. Yet the Scripture remains virginal, untouched in its deepest chambers. The faithful scholar who spends sixty years in prayerful study barely scratches the surface of divine wisdom encoded within these sacred pages. Melvill's observation challenges our superficial readings: we treat the Bible as a book to be mastered, when truly it is an infinite treasury designed to master us. The inexhaustibleness of Scripture testifies to the inexhaustible nature of Elohim Himself. When the psalmist wakes before dawn to meditate, he participates in an eternal conversation—drawing water from wells that shall never run dry, discovering again and again that the depths contain more than the heights reveal.
