The Internet's Most Humble Servant
In 1983, Paul Mockapetris invented something called the Domain Name System — DNS. You have probably never heard of it, but you use it hundreds of times a day. Every time you type a web address into your browser, DNS quietly translates that human-readable name into the numerical address computers actually understand. Without it, you would need to memorize strings of numbers like 142.250.80.46 just to check your email.
DNS handles trillions of requests every single day. It keeps the entire internet running. And yet virtually no one outside the technology world knows it exists. It does its work silently, faithfully, in the background — never calling attention to itself, never demanding recognition. It simply serves.
Jesus described this kind of life in Matthew 23:11-12: "The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."
True humility is not thinking less of yourself — it is thinking of yourself less. It is doing essential work without needing your name on the marquee. The most Christlike people I have known are like DNS: absolutely vital to their families, their churches, their communities, yet never seeking the spotlight.
This week, ask yourself: Am I willing to be essential without being visible? Am I content to serve without being seen?
