The Invisible Repair Crew That Never Stops Working

In 2015, Swedish scientist Tomas Lindahl shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for a discovery that should stop every one of us in our tracks. He found that our DNA sustains tens of thousands of damaging events every single day. Ultraviolet light, metabolic byproducts, simple chemical decay — the very act of being alive is an assault on the code that makes us who we are.

And yet we survive. We more than survive.

Lindahl discovered that our cells contain an elaborate repair system that works around the clock, scanning each strand of DNA, identifying the damage, snipping out the broken section, and rebuilding it — faithfully, tirelessly, without complaint. This process is called base excision repair, and it happens billions of times across your body before you finish your morning coffee.

Here is what strikes me about that. God did not design us for a world without damage. He designed us with the capacity to be restored in the midst of it.

The apostle Paul knew this long before any microscope confirmed it. "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair" (2 Corinthians 4:8). Perseverance was never the absence of injury. It is the faithfulness of repair.

So when life has torn something in you — and it will — remember that the God who engineered restoration into every cell of your body has not forgotten how to mend your spirit. He is already at work. He has not stopped.
