The Keeper of the Guest Book
In 2019, a small church in Appalachia called Mountain View Baptist kept a handwritten guest book by its front door. Pastor Elaine Marsh noticed something remarkable about one entry. A man named David had signed in on a Sunday morning and written beside his name: "Not sure I belong here."
David had been released from state prison eleven days earlier. He had no family left in the county. He walked two miles along Route 19 in January cold because someone at the halfway house mentioned the church served breakfast.
Pastor Marsh did not know any of this when she shook his hand. She only knew what she saw — a man hovering near the exit, coat still zipped, ready to bolt. She walked him to a seat. She brought him coffee. When he whispered that he had done terrible things, she said five words: "You are welcome at this table."
David never left that church. He was baptized that spring.
