The Kidney That Crossed Enemy Lines
In 2018, a man named Ron Derry sat in a hospital waiting room in Cleveland, preparing to give away his kidney. The recipient was his twenty-six-year-old daughter, Megan, who hadn't spoken to him in four years. She'd changed her last name, blocked his number, and told anyone who would listen that he was dead to her.
When Megan's kidneys failed, her mother called Ron. Not to reconcile. Just because he was the only tissue match. Ron didn't hesitate. He drove nine hours, checked himself into the pre-op wing, and prepped for surgery on behalf of a daughter who refused to see him beforehand.
The surgeon later said he'd never encountered anything like it. Most donors need emotional reassurance. Ron only asked one question: "Will she be all right?"
That is Romans 5 in a hospital gown. Paul does not say God waited until we cleaned ourselves up, until we apologized, until we earned His attention. He says Christ died for us while we were still sinners — still blocking His number, still pretending He did not exist. The Almighty did not require an invitation. He showed up with matching blood and a willingness to be cut open for people who wanted nothing to do with Him.
