The Language They Never Forgot

Maria Gonzalez grew up in a small apartment in El Paso where her abuela spoke only Spanish. No one ever sat Maria down for a formal lesson. There were no flashcards, no grammar drills, no textbook propped open on the kitchen table. This is exactly what Moses understood when he told the people of Israel to talk about God's commands "when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." He was not prescribing a curriculum. He was describing an atmosphere.

Children rarely remember the lecture you gave them about honesty. They remember that you went back into the store to return the extra change. They do not recall your Thursday night devotional word for word. They remember that you prayed out loud in the car when the news on the radio made you grieve.

Faith is not transferred in a single dramatic moment. It is absorbed through ten thousand ordinary ones. Deuteronomy 6 invites parents not to teach about God but to live so thoroughly with God that their children catch the language without ever remembering when the lesson began.
