The Last Number You Remember

Every year, millions of patients lie on operating tables and hear the anesthesiologist say, "Count backward from ten." They reach seven, maybe six. Then everything goes dark.

Think about what that moment requires. You are voluntarily surrendering consciousness — your ability to monitor, to object, to protect yourself — to someone you likely met thirty minutes ago. You cannot watch the surgeon's hands. You cannot ask questions mid-procedure. You are, in the most literal sense, placing your life in another person's hands while you sleep.

Dr. Atul Gawande, the renowned surgeon and author of Complications, has written extensively about what happens in that silence. The surgical team works with precision — clamping, cutting, repairing — while the patient knows nothing. The healing happens entirely outside the patient's awareness or control.

This is what trust looks like with God. So often we want to stay conscious through the process. We want to watch, to supervise, to understand every incision. But some of God's deepest work happens when we stop counting — when we surrender our grip on understanding and let the Healer work.

Proverbs 3:5 says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding." That word "lean" is the posture of someone trying to stay awake on the table, fighting the medicine, desperate to remain in control.

The surgery cannot begin until you let go. Neither can the healing.
