The Last Twenty Percent

If you have ever watched your phone charge, you have noticed something frustrating. The battery climbs from ten percent to eighty percent in what feels like minutes. Then it crawls. That last twenty percent takes nearly as long as the first eighty. You start wondering if something is wrong.

Nothing is wrong. Engineers at companies like Apple and Samsung designed lithium-ion batteries to charge this way on purpose. The technology is called absorption charging — once the battery reaches about eighty percent capacity, the charging algorithm deliberately reduces the current flowing into the cells. Why? Because pushing full voltage into a nearly full battery generates dangerous heat. It degrades the cells. It shortens the battery's lifespan by months or even years. The slow finish is what protects the battery's future.

I think about this when I read James 1:4: "Let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing."

Sometimes the early seasons of spiritual growth come fast. You feel yourself changing almost overnight — old habits falling away, new understanding flooding in. And then everything seems to slow down. You pray the same prayers. You wrestle the same weaknesses. You wonder if God has stalled out on you.

He hasn't. He has shifted into absorption mode. The Almighty knows that rushing the final stages of transformation would damage something fragile and essential forming inside you. The slow work is the deep work. The patience you are being asked to practice is not a delay — it is the very process completing you.
