The License Key
When Windows XP launched in 2001, Microsoft introduced product activation — a 25-character code that unlocked the full operating system. Without it, users could run the computer for thirty days, then the system would slip into a restricted state: limited functions, constant warnings, no real ability to work. The machine was running, but it wasn't truly free.
Paul describes our condition before Christ in strikingly similar terms. In Romans 6, he writes that we were once "slaves to sin" — the system was running, but locked into patterns we couldn't break on our own. We could glimpse the life we were made for, but couldn't reach it.
Then comes grace.
Christ's atoning work is not a temporary workaround or a thirty-day trial. It is a permanent activation — a full pardon that releases what God always intended for us to be. "For freedom Christ has set us free" (Galatians 5:1). Not a restricted mode. Not a grace period that expires. The full design, fully unlocked.
