The Light Makers
In 2012, marine biologist Dr. Edith Widder descended into the midnight zone of the ocean, more than a thousand meters below the surface, where sunlight never reaches. What she and her team discovered astonished the scientific world. In that crushing, pitch-black environment, roughly seventy-six percent of the creatures produce their own light through a process called bioluminescence. Jellyfish pulse with blue fire. Squid paint themselves in glowing patterns. Tiny dinoflagellates erupt in cascades of cold flame when disturbed. In the deepest darkness on Earth, the overwhelming majority of living things shine.
They do not wait for light to find them. They generate it from within.
There is something profoundly courageous about that. These creatures do not flee the darkness or pretend it is not real. They inhabit it fully and answer it with radiance.
The scriptures call us to the same defiance. "The light shines in the darkness," John writes, "and the darkness has not overcome it." Courage is not the absence of darkness. It is the willingness to glow in the middle of it. It is showing up to the hospital room, speaking the hard truth in love, stepping into the unfamiliar calling when every instinct says to stay hidden.
The God who taught a jellyfish to burn in the abyss has placed His own light inside you. The darkness is real, but you were made to shine in it.
