The Light Makers of the Deep

In the deepest waters of the ocean, below a thousand meters, sunlight cannot reach. The pressure is immense. The cold is unrelenting. By every reasonable measure, it is a place inhospitable to life. And yet marine biologists have discovered something astonishing: nearly ninety percent of the creatures living in the deep sea produce their own light. Through a chemical reaction called bioluminescence — a compound called luciferin combining with oxygen — jellyfish, squid, and fish generate a glow from within their own bodies. They do not wait for the sun to find them. They make their own light in the darkness.

Courage works the same way in the life of faith. It is not the absence of darkness. It is not waiting until the pressure lets up or the circumstances improve. Courage is the refusal to let the darkness have the final word. It is what the apostle Paul described when he wrote, "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair" (2 Corinthians 4:8).

The world will tell you that courage means having no fear. But the creatures of the deep teach us something truer: courage means carrying a light inside you that no depth of darkness can extinguish. That light is not something you manufacture on your own. It is the Holy Spirit, dwelling within you, burning steady when everything around you has gone dark.
