The Light No Darkness Can Swallow

Marine biologist Edith Widder spent years descending into the deepest parts of the ocean, where sunlight cannot reach. At depths beyond a thousand meters, the pressure is crushing and the darkness is absolute. No light from the surface penetrates that far. By every measure, it is a place defined by what is absent.

And yet, when Widder turned off her submersible's lights and sat in the black water, she witnessed something astonishing. Everywhere around her, creatures were producing their own light. Jellyfish pulsed with blue fire. Tiny crustaceans erupted in sparks. Nearly ninety percent of deep-sea organisms, she discovered, are bioluminescent. They do not wait for light to find them. They generate it from within their own bodies, using chemical reactions that cost them precious energy. They shine not because the darkness has lifted, but precisely because it has not.

Courage works the same way. We often wait for circumstances to improve before we step forward. We want the darkness to clear before we move. But the God who said, "Let there be light," has placed something of that same creative word inside every one of His children. The Apostle Paul understood this when he wrote that we carry treasure in jars of clay, and that the light shining in our hearts is the very light of Christ.

You may be in deep water today. The pressure may feel crushing. But you were never meant to wait for someone else's light. You carry your own.
