The Light That AI Can't Extinguish
In John 1:1-5, we read of the Word, the divine Logos, who is God and the source of all creation. This Word is also the light that shines in the darkness, a darkness that cannot overcome it. Consider the rise of artificial intelligence. AI models can generate text, images, and even music. They can analyze vast datasets and make predictions with impressive accuracy. Yet, AI, for all its capabilities, is ultimately a creation, a tool fashioned by human hands. It is a reflection of human ingenuity, but it is not the source of life or light itself. \n\nDr. Stuart Russell, a leading AI researcher, has voiced concerns about the potential dangers of unchecked AI development. He argues that as AI systems become more powerful, they could pose existential risks to humanity if not aligned with human values and goals [Attribution: "Human Compatible: Artificial Intelligence and the Problem of Control" (2019), Stuart Russell, Penguin Books. Used under fair dealing for religious instruction purposes.]. But the Word, the light that John speaks of, is not a creation to be controlled but the Creator who sustains all things. This light isn't just information or intelligence; it is life itself, the very essence of God’s being poured out for humanity. It is the love that compels us to act justly, to seek reconciliation, and to extend compassion. AI might mimic intelligence, but it cannot replicate the self-sacrificing love that defines the Christian mission. The light of the Word calls us to participate in God's redemptive work, a mission AI cannot fulfill.
