The Light That Was Always Traveling

In December 2021, NASA launched the James Webb Space Telescope from a launchpad in French Guiana. It took twenty-five years to design and build. Engineers folded its gold-plated mirrors like origami just to fit it inside the rocket. Then came the agonizing wait — six months of unfolding, cooling, and calibrating before the first images arrived.

When they did, the world gasped. Webb revealed galaxies whose light had been traveling toward us for over thirteen billion years. That light was not new. It had been streaming through the cosmos long before any telescope existed to receive it. The universe had been broadcasting its glory all along. We simply lacked the instrument to see it.

Hope works the same way. When we walk through seasons of grief or confusion, it can feel as though God has gone silent — as though the promises of Scripture have dimmed beyond detection. But the light of the Almighty's faithfulness is not absent. It is in transit. It has been moving toward us since before we knew to look for it.

The psalmist understood this: "I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living" (Psalm 27:13). That confidence is not wishful thinking. It is the settled knowledge that God's mercy is already on its way.

You may not see the answer yet. But like those ancient galaxies pouring their light across the void, the faithfulness of God is traveling toward you — and it has never, not for one moment, stopped.
