The Man Who Kept Going Back

In the 2016 film Hacksaw Ridge, there is a scene that leaves audiences barely breathing. Army medic Desmond Doss stands atop a bloodied escarpment on Okinawa while his entire company retreats under devastating Japanese fire. He carries no weapon — he had refused one on conviction — and every soldier around him has either fallen or fled. By all reason, he should climb down the cargo nets and save himself.

Instead, he runs back into the smoke.

Again and again, Doss drags broken men to the cliff's edge, lowers them on a makeshift rope, and whispers the same desperate prayer: "Lord, help me get one more." Through the night and into the next morning, with bullets snapping past his ears and mortar shells cratering the ground beneath him, he rescues seventy-five wounded soldiers — one life at a time, each trip a fresh decision to die if necessary.

What makes that prayer so piercing is its echo of a greater voice. Long before Doss knelt on that ridge, the Son of God looked out over a broken world and made the same choice — not once, but with every step toward Jerusalem, every lash across His back, every nail driven through His hands. He kept going back for one more.

Sacrifice is never a single dramatic moment. It is the relentless, costly decision to say again, "One more." Who is the one more the Almighty is asking you to reach today?
