The Marble Nobody Wanted

In 1463, the city of Florence commissioned a massive block of Carrara marble to become a sculpture for the cathedral. The sculptor Agostino di Duccio began roughing it out, then abandoned it. A decade later, Antonio Rossellino took a look and walked away. For twenty-five years, that eighteen-foot slab of marble sat neglected in a courtyard, exposed to rain and wind. The workers called it "the Giant." Most considered it ruined — too shallow, too flawed, too far gone for anything meaningful.

Then, in 1501, a twenty-six-year-old named Michelangelo asked for it. Where others saw a rejected block, he saw David. He spent over two years carving what many consider the greatest sculpture ever created, working with every gouge and imperfection the previous artists had left behind. When someone asked how he did it, tradition holds that he said he simply removed everything that was not David.

Here is the truth that marble teaches us: God does not look at your life the way those first two sculptors looked at that stone. He does not see damaged goods. He does not see wasted years. The Almighty looks at every crack, every rough edge, every season you spent sitting in the rain feeling purposeless, and He sees exactly what He intends to reveal.
