The Marble That Nobody Wanted
In 1464, the cathedral workshop in Florence commissioned an enormous block of Carrara marble for a statue of David. The sculptor Agostino di Duccio began roughing out the form, then abandoned the project. Another artist, Antonio Rossellino, took a brief look and walked away too. For twenty-six years, that massive slab of stone sat exposed in the cathedral yard — rained on, weathered, written off by everyone as a ruined block that could never become anything beautiful.
Then, in 1501, a twenty-six-year-old named Michelangelo asked for the contract. Where others saw damaged goods, he saw possibility. For over two years, he chiseled and carved, coaxing out of that rejected stone one of the most breathtaking sculptures the world has ever seen. The David stands seventeen feet tall in Florence to this day — born from marble that everyone else had given up on.
The Apostle Paul wrote, "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair" (2 Corinthians 4:8). There are seasons when you feel like that abandoned block — weathered by disappointment, written off, left sitting in the yard. But the Master Artist has not walked away from you. He sees what you will become. Every strike of the chisel is purposeful.
Do not mistake a long process for an abandoned one. God finishes what He starts.
