The Marriage of Truth and Love: A Meditation on 2 John
Truth and love.
We speak them as if they were opposites. As if one must choose. Hard truth or soft love. Doctrine or relationship. Being right or being kind.
The Elder—John, the last living witness, ancient now and writing from Ephesus—knows no such division. "The elder, to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth—and not I only, but also all who know the truth—because of the truth, which lives in us and will be with us forever."
Count the word. Truth. Four times in two verses. Not truth as abstraction. Not truth as proposition to be defended. Truth as dwelling place. Truth that lives in us. Truth that accompanies us forever, a companion on the road.
