The Martian: Discerning God's Will in New Contexts - Missional (Romans 12:1-2)
In the film The Martian, we meet Mark Watney, a brilliant astronaut who finds himself stranded on Mars, a desolate landscape filled with red dust and barren rocks, far from the comforting familiarity of Earth. Alone and seemingly abandoned, Watney faces the daunting challenge of survival under conditions where every earthly assumption falls flat. He cannot rely on conventional solutions; he must think differently, creatively, and contextually. With every meal he grows in that makeshift greenhouse, he is not just cultivating potatoes; he is embodying hope against despair.
This is a striking reflection of our call as believers, especially as we grapple with Romans 12:2, "Do not be conformed to this world." Too often, we hear the echo of cultural Christianity, as if the Gospel can be reduced to a set of formulas or rituals that we can simply transplant from one context to another. But like Watney, we are invited to engage deeply with our surroundings, to cultivate a renewed mind that asks: What does the kingdom of God look like here, in our own neighborhoods, in our workplaces, amidst our families?
We must avoid the trap of bringing our own preconceived notions into each new situation. Instead, we are called to discern, to listen, and to seek the Spirit's guidance in real-time. Just as Watney improvises with duct tape and a commander's spirit, we too must be resourceful—we must reflect the love of Christ in ways that resonate with those around us. This discernment isn't a solo mission; it's communal. Together, we can discover how to embody the good news in our unique context, cultivating joy and bringing life where there seems to be only dust.
