When Anabaptist martyrs went to their deaths, they weren't conforming to the world's pattern of self-preservation. They were transformed by a different vision: Christ crucified. "Do not conform to the pattern of this world"—the world said recant and live; their renewed minds said remain faithful and truly live. The living sacrifice became literal. Michael Sattler, burned at the stake, was offered freedom if he'd deny his faith. He chose the altar. That's what Romans 12:1-2 can cost.
