A novice gardener was horrified to see the master gardener cutting away large, healthy-looking branches from a prized rosebush. 'Stop!' he cried. 'You're killing it!' The master gardener smiled and continued cutting. 'These branches are stealing energy from the flowers. If I don't prune now, you'll have lots of leaves but few roses. Trust me—this cutting will lead to greater blooming.' Months later, the novice was amazed. The pruned bush produced the most magnificent roses in the entire garden, while the unpruned bushes remained leafy but produced few flowers. Sometimes God's pruning in our lives feels devastating. He removes relationships, opportunities, or comforts that seem good and healthy. We cry out, 'Stop! You're ruining my life!' But Jesus said, 'I am the vine; you are the branches. Every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful' (John 15:1-2). God's pruning isn't punishment—it's preparation for greater fruitfulness. He cuts away what's good to make room for what's best. The Hebrew word for prune literally means 'to make clean.' God removes not just what's bad but what's unnecessary, what's distracting us from our true purpose. Hebrews 12:11 acknowledges that 'no discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace.' Trust the Master Gardener's wisdom, even when His pruning shears seem harsh.
