The Mending That Never Stops

In 1974, Swedish chemist Tomas Lindahl made a discovery that puzzled the scientific world. DNA, the molecule carrying the blueprint for every living thing, was far more fragile than anyone had assumed. Each cell in your body sustains up to one hundred thousand molecular injuries every single day — from sunlight, metabolic byproducts, even the simple chemistry of being alive.

By all accounts, life should be impossible. But Lindahl discovered something remarkable: an army of specialized enzymes that patrol your DNA around the clock, detecting damage and stitching the broken strands back together. They never clock out. They never take a day off. For this work, Lindahl shared the 2015 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Here is what strikes me about this: the miracle of your life right now depends not on the absence of damage, but on repair that never quits.

The apostle Paul understood this in his bones. "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair" (2 Corinthians 4:8). He never promised a life without breakage. He promised a God whose restoring work never ceases.

Some of you are weary this morning. The damage feels relentless. But the Almighty who designed repair into the very fabric of your cells has not stopped His mending work in your life either. Perseverance is not pretending you are not broken. It is trusting that the One who repairs all things is still at work.
