The Mending You Never Feel

In 2015, Swedish scientist Tomas Lindahl shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for a discovery that should stop every one of us in our tracks. He found that your DNA — the instruction manual for every cell in your body — sustains tens of thousands of lesions every single day. Ultraviolet light, metabolic byproducts, simple chemical instability — all of it damages the delicate strands that hold you together.

But here is what took Lindahl's breath away: your cells already know how to fix it. Specialized enzymes patrol your DNA like watchmen walking the walls, detecting breaks and errors, snipping out damaged sections, and stitching the strands back together with astonishing precision.
