The Mission: Courage for Uncharted Territory - Missional (Joshua 1:9)

Imagine a scene: the sun hangs low in the sky, casting long shadows over the untamed wilderness of a jungle. The air is thick with humidity, and the distant calls of exotic birds echo through the trees. Father Gabriel, a Jesuit priest, stands at the edge of this hostile territory, his heart pounding like a drum in his chest. He has no map, no assurances of safety, only a deep, abiding calling and the promise of God’s presence. With each step into the unknown, he recalls the words of Joshua 1:9: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Father Gabriel’s journey parallels that of Joshua, who stood at the banks of the Jordan River, ready to lead his people into the Promised Land. Just as Joshua faced the uncertainty of crossing a turbulent river into a land filled with giants, Gabriel must navigate the treacherous waters of cultural barriers, hostile environments, and deep-seated fears. Yet, as he steps forward, he feels the weight of God’s promise enveloping him, encouraging him to push through the fear that claws at his heart.

Brothers and sisters, this is the essence of our mission today. We are called to enter uncharted territories in our lives—whether it’s embracing new cultures, reaching out to our neighbors, or stepping into the unknown paths that God lays before us. The same God who was with Joshua in the wilderness is with us now, offering courage for our crossings and strength for our journeys. Let us remember that in every unfamiliar landscape we find ourselves in, we are not alone; we carry His promise, and through Him, we find the courage to thrive in the mission He has set before us.
