The Mother Who Chose Not to Eat
In 2014, researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute documented something extraordinary. Marine biologist Bruce Robison and his team observed a deep-sea octopus — Graneledone boreopacifica — guarding her eggs on a rocky ledge, half a mile beneath the Pacific. They returned to that same spot again and again over the following months. Each time, she was there, her body draped over the cluster of eggs, gently aerating them with fresh water, brushing away parasites, refusing to leave.
She never ate. Not once.
For fifty-three months — nearly four and a half years — that mother octopus starved herself to protect her developing young. By the final visit, her skin was pale and torn, her eyes clouded. When the eggs finally hatched and tiny octopuses drifted into the current, she was gone. She had given everything she had so they could live.
Something in that image should stop us cold. A creature with no theology, no commandment, no promise of heaven, pouring out her life so that the next generation might have a chance.
How much more the sacrifice of the One who did know — who saw the full cost before the foundation of the world and chose the cross anyway? Christ did not stumble into Calvary. He walked there deliberately, arms open, holding nothing back.
The deepest love is never accidental. It is chosen, and it costs everything.
