The Mother Who Chose to Disappear

In the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest, marine biologists have documented one of nature's most staggering acts of devotion. The female giant Pacific octopus, after laying up to 100,000 eggs in a rocky den, begins a vigil that will cost her everything. For six to seven months — sometimes longer in deeper, colder waters — she guards those eggs without eating a single meal. She aerates them with gentle jets of water, brushes away parasites, and shields them from predators. Her body slowly consumes itself, muscle and organ tissue breaking down to keep her alive just long enough. Researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute once observed a deep-sea octopus brooding for an astonishing four and a half years — the longest known egg-brooding period of any animal on earth.

By the time her young emerge into the current, the mother is spent. She drifts away and dies, having poured out everything she had so that life could go on.

Something in that image should stop us cold. Because the God we worship did not stumble into sacrifice accidentally. The Almighty chose it. Before the foundation of the world, the Lamb was slain. Every breath of Jesus's earthly life was a slow, deliberate pouring out — teaching, healing, touching, weeping — until there was nothing left to give but His body on the wood.

Sacrifice is never what you lose. It is what lives because you were willing to disappear.
