The Mother Who Gave Everything

In 2007, researchers from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute discovered a deep-sea octopus clinging to a rocky ledge, half a mile beneath the Pacific Ocean. She was guarding her eggs. When the team returned months later, she was still there. They came back again and again — for four and a half years. Each visit, she was thinner, her skin more pale, her body slowly consuming itself. She never left. She never ate. For fifty-three months, she shielded those eggs with her own wasting body until they hatched. Then she died.

Bruce Robison, the lead scientist, called it the longest known brooding period of any animal on Earth. What stunned the research team was not just the duration but the completeness of the sacrifice. She did not take breaks. She did not feed herself on the side. She poured out everything she had so that new life could emerge.

When the Apostle Paul wrote that Christ "did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself," he used a word — kenosis — that means a total pouring out. Not a partial giving. Not a convenient generosity. The cross was not a gesture. It was everything.

Most of us give from our surplus. We sacrifice what we can afford to lose. But the God who hung on Calvary held nothing back. He gave until there was nothing left to give — so that you and I could live.

That is the nature of divine love. It does not calculate the cost. It simply gives.
